The Indian Institute of Health and Family Welfare (formerly State Institute of Health and Family Welfare) was established by Government of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1992 with financial assistance from the WB under India Population Project – VI (IPP –VI) to serve as an apex Institute for providing training to health personnel from the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare. It is an autonomous Institute registered under the A.P. Registration of Societies Act, 1956.

Initially IIHFW, started functioning from the campus of Directorate of Medical and Health Services and in 1994, shifted to its present campus located in Vengal Rao Nagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
